USF Baseball Opens Tournament With 7-0 Shutout Against Penn

(Fresno) - USF baseball opened play in the 2005 Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic with a 7-0 shutout of Penn Monday morning at Beiden Field on the campus of tournament host Fresno State. The Dons (7-6) got an outstanding start from senior right-hander Nick Pereira (3-1) who tossed eight shutout innings against the Quakers (0-3).

San Francisco broke open the scoreless game in the fifth inning, erupting for six runs off powered by and RBI single from Jonnie Knoble, a two-run double by freshman shortstop Tavo Hall, an RBI double from junior outfielder Stefan Gartrell. The Dons sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning. Freshman infielder Mitchell Bialosky added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Pereira allowed just four hits and struck out seven Quakers against just a pair of free passes. Freshman right-handed reliever Josh Gordon pitched a no-hit ninth to preserve the shutout. Josh Appell (0-1) suffered the loss for Penn, allowing five runs off five hits and struck out a pair.

USF tallied 11 base hits eight Dons regulars tallied at least on base knock. Hall finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base, while Gartrell also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

San Francisco returns to action in the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic Tuesday when they take on Southern Utah. First pitch against the T-Birds is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Beiden Field and live audio will be available throughout the tournament on USFDons.com.
