Final Stats

(San Francisco) - USF's offense recorded a season-high 13 hits in route to an 11-5 non-conference win over Sacramento State Friday afternoon in the 2006 home opener at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons (2-3) collect their second straight victory behind strong hitting and relief pitching, at the expense of the Hornets (0-3), who dropped their third straight against USF. The fog slowly crept in as the game lasted an astonishing three hours and 46 minutes.

Every starter for USF had a hit in the game, as seven of the Dons 13 hits went for extra bases (six doubles and a home run). Senior outfielder Stefan Gartrell had the hottest bat of the night for San Francisco, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI. The home run was the San Francisco native's first on the year and he was only a triple away from the cycle.

Also having a big impact was sophomore outfielder Luke Sommer who had four RBI on the night, three of which came on a two-out bases clearing double to right center in the bottom of the sixth. His first RBI of the game came off a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore shortstop Tavo Hall in the third.

Don senior right-hander Patrick McGuigan (1-1) went 5.2 innings in only his third career start to earn the win, his first on the year and 11th career. Freshman right-hander Jeff Gordon had his second consecutive successful outing in the Green and Gold, totaling 3.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn his first save.

Junior outfielder Scott Cousins added his second double of the year, as did sophomore infielders Mitchell Bialosky and Joey Railey. Junior catcher and San Francisco native, Daniel Morales also got in on the doubles parade, adding his first.

Sacramento State started the scoring early; plating two in the top of the first, but could only muster three more over the next six innings. Senior infielder Brian Blauser, son of ex-major leaguer Jeff Blauser, was two for five with a homerun. Senior catcher Buddy Morales was 3-for-4, and senior infielder Everet Rincon added two hits for the Hornets.

The Dons and Hornets meet again Saturday, February 11 at Benedetti Diamond. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
