GENERAL CAPSULE: Good defensive outfielder...great power...hits for high average...will be a leader on this team. AT USF (2005): Led the team in many offensive categories as a junior, including first in batting average (.364), doubles (12), RBI (41), and slugging percentage (.552), and third in hits (52), homeruns (5), on base percentage (.409), and total bases (79)...played in 45 games, starting 38...went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI against San Jose State (2/8)...was 1-for-2 with a homerun at Sacramento State (2/12)...went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI vs. Monmouth (3/10)...was 2-for-2 with a double at home versus Santa Clara (3/26)...went 4-for-5 with three RBI vs. Pepperdine (4/3)...at Pepperdine, went 2-for-4 with a homerun and four RBI (5/21). AT USF (2004): Enjoyed a productive sophomore season starting 38 games...tied for the team lead in homeruns with six...finished third on the team in slugging percentage at .455... hit his first home run of the season while going 2-for-3 with a RBI versus Lafayette College (3/17)... had a breakout day against UC Davis going 4-for-5 with and RBI and three runs scored (4/6)... four days later had another terrific day going 3-for-5 with a homerun and four RBI versus Gonzaga (4/10)... in his first career multi-homer day he went 3-for-5 with two homeruns and two RBI against Saint Mary's (4/18)... went 1-for-2 with a three run homerun against Loyola Marymount (4/24)... versus Pepperdine went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI and a run scored. AT USF (2003): Appeared in 19 games with three starts as a freshman... drove in three runs off five hits... slammed RBI double against UC Riverside (2/28)... went 1-for-2 with an RBI at Fresno State (2/23). PREP CAREER: Four-year baseball and basketball player for the Fightin' Irish... hit .500... first team, All-League baseball semi-finalist for player of the year in 2002... graduated with honors. PERSONAL: Maurice Stefan Gartrell... nickname is "Cheeks"... goal for the season is to help this team win its first conference title... chose USF because he loves SF and he wants to see his city listed as the best academic/athletic institution ever... the thing he likes most about San Francisco is the fog... if he could be anyone for a day he'd be Bill Gates... the best advice he could give is to "Play hard, die hard"... Willie Mays is his sports hero... cousin, Bobby Shaw, plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars... parents are Maurice and Beverly Gartrell... born January 14, 1984 in San Francisco, CA.
