Athletic Director Debi Gore-Mann's Comments Corner

Feb. 18, 2008

We are speeding along through our winter sports season but I'd like to take a minute to acknowledge our academic achievements.

Near the end of January, the West Coast Conference 2007 Fall Sports All-Academic team was announced. I would like to take this time to acknowledge three of our student-athletes who were named to the. Lucy Miller, cross country, Darcy Carroll, volleyball and Chris Rodd of men's soccer were recently named to the WCC team. We want to congratulate each of them for representing USF Athletics proudly with their distinction.

Also, in early February the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), announced the women's collegiate basketball players who have earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-Academic District VIII honors. Two USF's student-athletes were tabbed with honors: Lisa Olden for second team honors and Dominique Carter rounded out the selections from the WCC on the third team.

In addition, Dominique Carter of the women's basketball program is also having a stellar senior year in which she currently lead the Dons and is ranked in the top 20 in total points (160 points) an average at 20.0 per game, tied for first in total rebounds (51) for an average 6.4 rebounds per game and highest field goal percentage (56.3%). Dominique's performance puts her at 14th on the NCAA Women's Basketball, Division I, points per game through games as of 02/10/2008 - which puts Dominique two ahead of Stanford's Candice Wiggins (alumnus Alan Wiggins Junior's sister) who currently sits at number 16 at 19.2 points per game average.

We are also very proud to have Coach Nino Giarratano selected as one of the coaches for the 2008 USA Baseball National team. Coach Giarratano will join the USA Baseball National Team and will begin a pre-trials training camp in conjunction with the New England Collegiate Baseball League beginning June 10, 2008. USA Baseball then partners with Coastal Plain League franchises to present the National Team Trials. The National Team will be named on June 24 and will begin a seven-game series vs. the Chinese Taipei National Team from June 25-July 1 including stops in Durham, NC and Cary, NC. This will be the fifth installment of the international friendship series between the U.S. and Chinese Taipei. Coach Giarratano is fortunate to be able to participate in this international format to expand his coaching and teaching skills and to represent USF Athletics.

More good news from the Hilltop, I want to point out that Coach Mark Carr, head coach of our women's soccer program, has arguably put together one of the best recruiting classes for that program in years. Coach Carr and I are tremendously excited about these incoming freshmen and positive contribution they hope to bring.

If you did not get a chance, please watch the new documentary on the storied 1951 USF Dons Undefeated, Untied, Uninvited squad.
